Around fifty cars have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Officers say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then located multiple other vandalized cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say initial examinations indicate the liquid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; authorities are not yet aware of any injuries in association with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.
A senior representative commented the incident made him without words and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, referring to the murder of nine people by a shooter aiming at people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
