This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when the couple relocate from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple confront the type of challenges that arise in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
